The Magic Numbers on Mercury new songs and beards
Romeo Stodart, frontman of The Magic Numbers, spoke about being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, starting work on a new (maybe double) album and 'The Beard'.
"It’s great to be nominated with all the other bands,” he explained, “So far this year there have been some great albums come out, so it does mean a lot. Every year I’ve gone out and bought loads of those [Mercury nominated] albums, so it’s good for more people to go out and hear our band. We’re very excited and look forward to finding out the result.”
Although the band's self-titled debut has only just come out, the band is aleady thinking about their next record.
“We've got a bunch of new songs that we can't wait to go in and record,” explained Romeo, “It's quite hard to pinpoint exactly where it's going to go because a lot of the songs are quite different from each other, which is quite exciting. There's a lot of acoustic lead songs and some more crazy arrangements, a bit more out there, maybe a double album... you never know.”
One of the new songs is entitled 'The Beard': it started life as a studio muck around, then they started playing it live and at a gig in Manchester Romeo asked the audience, "If anyone wants to name this song, shout out some titles!"
After a shouting match the audience suddenly went silent and one person yelled 'The Beard!' and they've called it so ever since. But it doesn't mean they are going to record it.”

Michael Jackson: US out of love with 'King of Pop'
Michael Jackson's latest compilation has sold only 8,000 copies in its first week in the US as fans snub the singer. 'Greatest Hits' collection 'The Essential Michael Jackson' scrapped into the charts at 128 - a huge blow for Jackson, 46, who hoped to make a comeback after he was cleared of child sex abuse charges.
The figures represent a ssad decline since his heyday, when he sold 40 million copies of 'Thriller'.
