U2 honoured by Portugal

U2 are to be honoured by the Portuguese government this weekend, in recognition of their pioneering humanitarian work across a quarter of a century.

The band, playing the final show on their 'Vertigo' Euro-leg of the world tour in Lisbon, are to receive the Order Of Liberty from President Jorge Sampaio.

A presidential spokeswoman commented: "Over the past 25 years the band has allied its public exposure to the defence of human rights."

The Order Of Liberty honours efforts "to defend civilised values, dignify mankind and the cause of liberty", reports the BBC.

The group's efforts to combat Third World debt, seen most recently when they opened the London leg of Live8 with Sir Paul McCartney, earns them particular praise from Portuguese officials.

All four members of the band are expected to attend the investiture ceremony. The 'Vertigo' world tour completes in America at the end of 2005.
