The B-Boys: small place and short set

The Beastie Boys played a secret show in London on Saturday, 15 May, to showcase their comeback album, ‘Viva NYC!’… Er, pardon - ‘To the 5 Boroughs’, released in mid-June.

And, when faced with the trio in this close proximity, any critical faculties are left outside the entrace, in particular that this is their first show in - five years.

So close actually to see Ad-Rock’s split flying off the microphone!? Unfortunately they only played 35 minutes, but it was a set of whirlwind hits, crammed in from a stage that was obviously too small for them. They do it with a good sense of humour and keep on smiling all the time and goofing about.

Although this showcase was to introduce lucky fans to the music to the supplant to the 1997’s ‘Hello Nasty’, only two songs got included, heading with the current single, ‘Ch-check It Out’.

The B-Boys messed up the start of ‘So What’cha Want’ at their low-key ICA gig. Mike D urged the crowd to clap along to the intro but, when Ad-Rock began rapping, he fluffed his words to laughter from fans and his bandmates.

“We are all professionals here,” laughed Ad-Rock, before asking the audience to stay silent so he could perform the first verse acapella. Ironic cheers greeted the end of his performance. Other songs were ’Sure Shot’, ’Root Down’, 'Body Movin’ and a show-closing ’Intergalactic’.

The gig was only open to invited guests and competition winners. No smoking was allowed in the venue, and mobile phones that take pictures were also confiscated at the door. The London gig, which will be broadcast by Radio 1 [on Tue., 18 inst.,] is part of a whistle-stop European tour which is also taking in Paris, Sweden and Germany.

With Mixmaster Mike’s decknology skills more magical close up, it was time to regain ‘illin’’… And, one suspects, it always will be so.
